TV Review: “Good Bones”

Good Bones

INTRODUCTION: So May is a horrible month for me as hello allergies. I have them year round but something really kicks me in May. This year I didn’t get sick until the last day of May. After being unable to sleep due to excessive coughing, I went to the doctor. There in the office waiting room was a TV playing an HGTV show. Usually I get annoyed with these shows (see Property Brothers) which I totally admit is just me. My ears perked up when I heard “Indianapolis” and saw Mina and Karen talk about renovating downtown Indianapolis. Well cool! It was local and the women looked like fun. Sadly I was only able to watch a few minutes as the doctor called me to the treatment room, but when I finally got home, I TiVo’d the show.

I am so glad I did.

OVERALL: I love this show. It has joy and family and love and Indiana!!! This show is one of my happy places and I watch it a lot.

POINTS: I love the two stars, Mina Starsiak Hawk (she just got married) and Karen E. Laine. Karen is the mom. The two are so much fun to watch and they care about their projects and Indianapolis.

PITFALLS: I live an hour away from their working/stomping grounds.

FEMALE CHARACTER(S): Mina and Karen are a blast. They are passionate about their work and love their community. I think it is great that HGTV is showing this kind of show – where the people use their own money and are committed to community improvement. YAY! Oh and the men in their life and business are wonderful too.

CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Hmm… I’ll let you know.

HIGH POINT(S): Watching Mina and Karen work is so wonderful and funny! Their banter is delightful. Their home designs are beautiful. I feel so inspired when I watch this show. In fact, the show inspired me to go on a throwing away household operation. It is going slowly but I am actually doing it.

BECHDEL TEST (Website): 3 of 3. Every episode ’cause mom and daughter talk.

RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): 0 of 3-1 of 3. Yes there are PoC in the crews.

DVD/BLU-RAY WORTHY: Totally. I already bought it on digital through Amazon.

LION PAW PRINTS:  4 of 5. This show is my happy place.

UPDATE: I was so inspired by Good Bones that I hired Mina and Karen. That’s right the “Chicks” as, their Chief Operating Officer calls them in emails, came to our house and worked their magic. Yes in real life they are as beautiful, fun, funny, and talented as they are on TV. They were also just as nice as we thought they would be, though Hubby discovered they were much shorter. I loved watching them look through our home, seeing it through their eyes. They gave us wonderful ideas and even helped us solve a flooring problem! I am so looking forward to their written ideas. Even if Hubby and I don’t do everything they suggest, it will be so fun to see such beauty. They also told us to start throwing things away – LOL see High Points above – and said that was our homework for when they come back.

Hubby says they are beautiful people helping everybody. The price to hire them is worth it.

Build on Mina and Karen! Build on!

    • Exactly! It drove me crazy! And if it was really poison ivy, they didn’t take nearly enough care to keep it from their skin. They would have been covered by that incredibly itchy rash from the oil on the leaves! Plus some people can get a rash just from proximity to the leaves and vines.

  1. This is one show that my husband and I actually watch together.. He loves the girls Karen might be his favorite lol. We watch it all the time, even if we have seen it before there’s something about them. We love Good Bones
