Hello. I began this site using the Bechdel Test. I then, on January 28, 2014, decided to add the Racial Bechdel Test. Both are interesting and important tools for looking at movies and media, and therefore, a way to look at ourselves. On March 18, 2015 I added two new tests, the Mako Mori and Sexy Lamp. These are interesting ways to look at our stories.
The Original Bechdel Test is a pretty darn awesome tool for looking at movies. It goes something like this:
- It has to have at least two [named] women in it
- Who talk to each other
- About something besides a man
Ah. So you see this is another interesting way to rate movies. I shall need to add it to my reviews.

On March 19, 2015, I discovered a great new Bechdel Test site – Watch This Instead – and Twitter account – @BechdelBot. Excellent tools so check them out.
Totally worth it. 🙂
The Racial Bechdel Test is to PoC presence in the media what The Bechdel Test is to female presence in the media. It tests whether or not a form of media has a strong PoC presence.
The test is important because it shows trends in how PoC’s are not only represented in media, but also how they are portrayed.
In order to pass the test, three requirements must be met:
- There must be more than one character of color
- At least two characters of color must have a conversation
- The conversation has to be about something other than a white person
That’s it! Just three simple rules. Now let’s see what passes and what doesn’t.

The Mako Mori Test. Read the graphic below. Very interesting and a bit more compelling than the Bechdel.
The Sexy Lamp Test. OMG. I wish this didn’t make me laugh so hard. Check out the graphic below.
