OVERALL: Say it with me people: “Black is Beautiful.” Every shot, every word, every glorious view of Harlem was a celebration of black America. LOVED it! Made me want to visit Harlem. Can’t wait for Season 2!!!!

POINTS: Oh I thoroughly enjoyed this series!!! Loved watching Luke Cage evolve as a hero. Loved the cast of characters. Loved the powerful women.

PITFALLS: Hmmm…. Can’t think of any.

FEMALE CHARACTER(S): Yes. Oh my yes! So many wonderful, power, badass women in this show it made my heart sing!! Our trifecta of power: Simone Missick as Misty Knight, detective and a superhero in her own right. Alfre Woodard plays Mariah Dillard, villain extraordinaire who also can pull sympathy from the audience. Last but not least is Rosario Dawson who plays fantastic nurse and Luke supporter Claire Temple. 

Note: At one point in this show, four black women over 30 are discussing Luke’s legal fate. It was amazing!!!!!

CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Racism is smacked hard in this show and that is good. So is sexism. Everyone in this show is competent. Love it.

HIGH POINT(S): I LOVE watching Mike Colter as Luke Cage in a fight scene. Does he need special fighting skills? Nope. He is indestructible and strong. So he just walks into a fight, sighs when his shirts are ripped, and then punches people into walls. So. Much. Fun. 

Now let us praise Colter fully. He is perfect and carries this show well. He is powerful, has a deep beautiful voice, and is totally believable as an indestructible fighting machine. He also has a sensuousness on screen that is wonderful to watch. Well done sir!

Speaking of praising actors, let us also praise Mahershala Ali. Wow! He is a sensuous, powerful actor as well. However in this show he is villain Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes. As Stokes he appears to be small, mean, and brittle. Hats off to Ali because he totally changed his demeanor and I was impressed.
