KidMovieThon: “Elena of Avalor”

ELENA OF AVALOR – “Elena of Avalor” is an animated series that follows the story of Elena, a brave and adventurous teenager who saves her kingdom from an evil sorceress and must now learn to rule as crown princess until she is old enough to be queen. The series premieres this summer on Disney Channel. (Disney Channel)

OVERALL: I love my husband. He always find the best shows on TV for me. He TiVo’d Elena of Avalor and said that he thought I would like it. He was so right. We both like it. It is utterly charming and adorable and fun. Oooo and there’s singing!

POINTS: Beautiful animation, wonderful characters, humor, magic, music! This show is like watching your favorite Disney animated movie. I feel myself smiling the whole time I watch it.

PITFALLS: Watching teenagers and/or children make teenage/child mistakes can make me cringe and sometimes panic. This, however, is just me and my issue. The nice thing about a child’s TV show is that people tend to be nice and not throw egotistical fits that lead to war between kingdoms. Yeah, totally my issue.

FEMALE CHARACTER(S): Oh Elena. What a wonderful heroine! Elena is voice by Aimee Carrero who captures her youthful enthusiasm and loving heart perfectly. My guess is that is also Ms. Carrero singing and she has a wonderful voice. Elena is everything you could want in a hero of any gender: Smart, determined, and capable of learning from her own mistakes. Since this is a story centered on a young woman growing up, that is perfect.

We also have younger sister Princess Isabel voiced by Jenna Ortega, Naomi, voiced by Jillian Rose Reed, a teenager who’s father is a sailor and who ends up on Elena’s advisory council, and Grandma Luisa voice by Julia Vera. I so want to cosplay Luisa one day. They all have interesting voices and I am looking forward to watching them as the season progresses.

BTW: The men are good too. 🙂

CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Hmm….. I’ll let ya’ know.

HIGH POINT(S):

1.) Animation. The animation and colors in this show are so beautiful. They are warm colors and red is Elena’s primary color and also happens to be my favorite (along with purple). It is just so beautiful to watch. You could turn the sound off and just let your eyes enjoy.

2.) Music. Yes there is at least one song per episode and the songs are good. The music is good the lyrics are clever and the voices are beautiful. I am now thinking I should go see if I can buy them off the Web…

RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): 3 of 3. Since this is a Latina princess and her people and her first visitors looked to be Japanese, I think this is safe to say. 🙂 I like it.
