OVERALL: Another good Masterpiece Theater mystery/drama from England. These stories can’t be beat and Hubby and I love them.
POINTS: Big fan of Robson Green (character: police officer Georgie Keating) who Hubby and I have watched in other English shows. James Norton, who plays the main lead, Sidney Chambers, a Church of England Reverend in the small town of Grantchester. Watching the characters of Chambers and Keating work together, and the actors, Norton and Robson, play off each other, is a joy to watch. Beautiful scenery, good writing, intriguing characters, social commentary. This show has it.
PITFALLS: Well drat but the seasons are so short! I would like more, hint, hint.
FEMALE CHARACTER(S): We have many. Predominantly Morven Christie as Amanda Hopkins and Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs. Maguire. There are others who grace the screen and provide a view of life from the British women. It is clever how the show portrays their struggles and fears. They are very interesting and are excellent characters right along with their male counterparts. Here here!
CULTURAL PITFALL(S): This show is not afraid to look at classism, racism, and sexism and that is good. I like how the views are still seen through the lenses of post WWII Britain too. That is clever writing.
HIGH POINT(S): Have I mentioned the scenery? Hubby LOVES how beautiful the show is and so do I. We are both Anglophiles and looking at the beautiful countryside fills us both with joy. Plus the acting and camaraderie you feel with the cast and characters is good. It is a show you regret coming to an end and that is high praise indeed!
BECHDEL TEST (Website): 1 of 3 to 3 of 3, depending on the episode. There are times when I really enjoy watching the women talk.
RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): Mostly 0 of 3 with a 1 of 3 in one episode. Well it does take place in post WWII England and my guess is racial diversity hadn’t hit the small towns – yet.
DVD/BLU-RAY WORTHY: Yes.
LION PAW PRINTS: 3 of 5.
