The Hateful Eight
OVERALL: Wow. Who’d a thunk Tarantino could combine a Western and mystery. Way to go sir. You are truly one of America’s great film makers. Keep on filming sir – and don’t stop.
POINTS: Huh. 🙂 I was surprised by the turns of the characters even though I knew it was a Tarantino film and the characters in this were just no good. I still loved all of the twists.
PITFALLS: Now Tarantino does have a penchant for violence so yes this movie is bloody and it might make one uncomfortable. Then again, violence should upset us. So although I personally don’t find the violence a pitfall, as in a flaw in the film, it is something to be wary of.
FEMALE CHARACTER(S): The proclaimed “villain” is Daisy Domergue, played perfectly by Jennifer Jason Leigh. Never been a fan of Ms. Leigh – I am now. She is as complex and intriguing as her male counterparts. Cool. Plus she made me laugh a lot. Hubby too.
AND! That’s not all!
Well goodness me. I never expected there to be other women in this movie, but I should have known. We have Dana Gourrier as Minnie Mink, proprietor of the story’s rest stop. Belinda Owino as Gemma, Minnie’s hired help and dispenser of candy. And finally Zoë Bell as the charming stage coach driver. With just a few glances you could tell these women had worked together before and liked each other. It was utterly charming and delightful.
CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Nope. Tarantino loathes racism and he likes his women complex and bad ass. Me too.
HIGH POINT(S): It’s a Tarantino movie, you are watching an American master at play. It is beautiful, fabulously acted, and scripted perfectly. Plus you get to look at beautiful snowy mountains and horses! And it’s Tarantino doing what he does best: Hiring fabulous actors, filming them perfectly, and letting them do their thing. Excellent!!!
BECHDEL TEST (Website): 3 of 3. I should have known. I wasn’t expecting this but then again, this man did give us Kill Bill.
RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): 3 of 3. Of course. Another reason I am a Tarantino fan.

LION PAW PRINTS: 3.5 of 5. So good. But I don’t know if I could watch it again any time soon. Wow! That was potent. See it!
