Stargate: Atlantis

OVERALL: Since Hubby and I were rewatching Stargate: SG-1, we naturally had to move on to Stargate: Atlantis. I remembered that I liked this show but what is funny is that I am enjoying way more this time than before. I mean Stargate: Atlantis is good!  Hubby shares that Stargate: Atlantis is more hopeful in tone and theme song than Stargate: SG-1. I see his point. We are loving it.

POINTS: The cast really make this show. Yes teh  .

PITFALLS: Like Stargate: SG-1, Atlantis ended too soon.

FEMALE CHARACTER(S): What is great about Stargate: Atlantis is that we meet the Bechdel Test 3 of 3 requirements every time! There are two lead female characters: Torri Higginson as Dr. Elizabeth Weir, the Atlantis leader, and Rachel Luttrell as Teyla Emmagen, the leader of the Athosians, a race of people the Atlantis team meet. Both women are wonderful and the actresses are perfect. I also like that in later seasons Jewel Staite comes on and plays Dr. Jennifer Keller.

CULTURAL PITFALL(S): There are times when I want to tell the Atlantis crew to act more like anthropologists and not close-minded Earthlings.  Also Dr. Elizabeth Weir is supposed to be a great negotiator and arbitrator. Uh, not the way they write her. Oh well. I can’t imagine writing a world class negotiator having conversations that achieve closure in a 45 minute show.

HIGH POINT(S): The cast. I keep coming back to how wonderful the cast is. They work so beautifully together. Also I love how Teyla Emmagen speaks. She is so precise in her language – it feels like she did indeed come from another culture and world.

A fan at Comic Con once said that Stargate was filled with “autonomous” women. A to the MEN on that one brother!!!!! Teyla and Dr. Weir are perfectly autonomous. 🙂

BECHDEL TEST (Website): 3 of 3. Huzzah! As a Stargate fan said at a Comic Con panel discussion, the women of Stargate are autonomous. Excellent use of words and description! Love it! Stargate: Atlantis never fails.

RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): 1 of 3 to 3 of 3. The cast is still predominantly white but there are some PoC and that is GOOD. 🙂

DVD/BLU-RAY WORTHY: Goodness yes! I watched it when it first aired and I am so enjoying watching it on DVD again. 🙂
