Star Wars: The Last Jedi

OVERALL: Huge smile. It felt epic; it was satisfying. Hubby looked at me when it was over and said “We have to see this again.” The Force was strong with this one.

POINTS: I love the structure of this movie. The Force Awakens followed the structure of Star Wars: A New Hope. This movie followed the structure of Empire Strikes Back, then turned into Return of the Jedi, then went totally off book and did its own thing. So freaking cool!!

Plus war profiteering was discussed as a root of war/evil and that is an issue that I am glad was brought up. There was also mention of keeping people impoverished and abusing animals as activities done by the very rich/very bad people. Oh well done!

It feels like Star Wars is growing up and truly starting a new generation of thought and characters. I LIKE it!

PITFALLS: I’ll mention these in Cultural Pitfalls.

FEMALE CHARACTER(S): YES! We have Rey (Daisy Ridley), General Leia (Carrie Fisher), Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran), Vice Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern), and Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o). Whoa!!! Whoa!! They were cool, varied in ages, sizes, and color. I FREAKING LOVED IT!! Plus there were plenty of other women throughout all of the scenes in the background and that was good.

2.) Finn and Rose. Passing the Racial Bechdel Test for LOTS of the movie. YAY!!

3.) The farewell to Carrie Fisher at the end. Yes she will always be our princess and our general. Thanks for everything, Carrie.

SPOILER ALERT!

CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Ok, it really bothers me when characters hit each other when not in fights. I mean really! I was very disturbed when Leia slapped Poe. Yes, I understand why she was mad, but it  was just wrong. It was an older white person slapping a younger PoD. It was just wrong. Slapping is a degrading move and is meant to demean. Perhaps there are times for it and perhaps that is my cultural reading. However Poe could have kept his dignity and Leia would have looked like a better adult leader without the slap. I was very disappointed by that.

HIGH POINT(S):

1.) Vice Admiral/General Strategy Talk. So we have two seasoned warriors: Vice Admiral Holdo and General Leia say good-bye. God/Dess that is a scene reserved for men and here it is with these two seasoned powerful warriors and I FREAKING LOVED IT!!

I also liked that Holdo got to be a hero in the end as well, hubby and I wondered. 🙂

AND!

Leia surviving outer space because of what I presume was the Force just made my day!
