Get Out
OVERALL: Holy goosebumps this movie was GOOD!!! Well done Jordan Peele, well done!!! I wanted to scream “RUN!” the entire time I watched the movie. So excellent. You want to see a masterful horror movie, see this.
POINTS: This movie examined racial prejudices and stereotypes through the lenses of horror. OMG talk about brilliant. Because oppression – racism and how racism makes us behave – is a horror. This movie combines horror and social discomfort together. Brilliant!
PITFALLS: Can’t think of any.
FEMALE CHARACTER(S): Cool. Our main heroine/villain is Rose Armitage played perfectly by Allison Williams. She is attractive, smart, funny, and seemingly protective of her boyfriend. The fact that you couldn’t figure out her motivation or alignment throughout most of the movie is perfect.
I also found Catherine Keener portraying Missy Armitage to be perfectly chilling. Betty Gabriel as Georgina freaked me out as her portrayal of the character is so nuanced. Once you learn the “truth” of her character, it is extra terrifying.
CULTURAL PITFALL(S): LOL! This movie was about examining cultural racial nonsense so pitfalls were not there.
On A Personal Note: Dear Family, If I have ever behaved in such appalling and racist ways as the people in this move, please slap me. I deserve it.
HIGH POINT(S): The build-up of the movie. Like a good mystery, you can see it build and then when it is over you can go back and reflect on how the movie looks and works differently now that you know the truth. So well crafted and written. So well done.
