OVERALL: Welcome back, M. Night Shyamalan. Welcome back.
POINTS: The low key terror build-up in this movie was wow. Plus I loved Betty Buckley and her character Dr. Karen Fletcher. So awesome on so many levels.
PITFALLS: Hmm…. I’ll let ya’ know.
FEMALE CHARACTER(S): Our major heroine is Casey Cook played by Anya Taylor-Joy. For those familiar with abuse survivors you will see that her performance is perfect. Also heads-up to the other “victims” Haley Lu Richardson and Jessica Sula. Well done, ladies. You never fell into the stupid female victim trap and I loved it!
As previously written I love that Betty Buckley is back on the screen and doing a wonderful job. Plus I love that an older woman with an advanced degree and career got to be a central part of this story. Good see some stereotypes broken.
CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Nope. Again, well done Mr. Shyamalan.
HIGH POINT(S): If all you went to this movie for was watching James McAvoy OWN the screen and RULE as an actor. Never doubt he is an amazing actor. He needs to be nominated for this role if not win every award. Watching him play each personality AND grow as a character, well, just well done.
BECHDEL TEST (Website): 3 of 3. Yup!
RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): 1 of 3. Room for improvement.
