Movie Review: “Star Trek: Beyond”

Star Trek: Beyond international poster

OVERALL: Oh my but this was the best of three in the reboot! What a GOOD movie and Star Trek tale. Go see this now!!!!!! It’s Trek and it is oh so good!

POINTS: Cudos to Simon Pegg and Doug Jung for the wonderful salute to Star Trek canon and spirit.

PITFALLS: It isn’t out on DVD yet because I would so watch it right now!

FEMALE CHARACTER(S): Yup. Zoe Saldana walks tall and even gets to pick butt at Lt. Uhura. We also have new characters Sofia Boutella as Jaylah, Lydia Wilson as Kalara, Anita Brown as Tyvanna, and the incredible, breathtaking, deep voiced Shohreh Aghdashloo as Commodore Paris. There are also many women and PoC in the crowd scenes as well as aliens of the wonderful Trek variety. Our Trek women get to be full characters and it is very cool and enjoyable.

CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Hmm…. I’ll let ya’ know.

1.) Canon Jokes & Moments. When I say canon, I mean things that are part of the story and have been declared as TRUE according to the creator. Let’s just say the ripped shirt and Spock/McCoy scenes to be perfect.

2.) Music. Who’d a thunk Sabotage by the Beastie Boys would MAKE a scene. Oh well done! Rihanna singing the movie song Sledgehammer is just wonderful. Quite perfect for the movie. You can listen to it and watch the official music video below.

3.) Idris Elba as Krall. Elba plays  our villain, Krall. Krall’s story is revealed in a way I have not seen before/don’t remember. In fact I was worried that we would never understand Krall’s motivation. When it was revealed it was good. AND because Elba has the serious acting chops, his Krall was filled with the appropriate range of rage and grief. Oh well done!

4.) Entire Cast. This movie HAS to be well cast or it would have tanked right after the first one opened. This cast embodies their characters and salutes the original actors as well. I honor and love all of them.

BECHDEL TEST (Website): 2 of 3. Lots of wonderful women doing wonderful things but I can’t remember if there was a scene where two women just talked with themselves.

RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): 3 of 3. This is because Zoe Saldana and Idris Elba have several scenes together. Granted Idris Elba is made-up but he is still an actor of color. Also Zoe Saldana and John Cho have a scene together. ‘Tis made of the win.

LION PAW PRINTS:  3.5 of 5. Oh so good.

SCOTT SAYS: “What I liked about Roddenberry was that he believed humanity had matured. While the first two were good, they were very confrontational. I liked this movie because it was about unity and peace.”
