Supergirl

OVERALL: Oh my! What an adorable darling, wonderful, action-filled show this is! I LOVE IT! Hubby and I look forward to watching it every week.

Supergirl! Long may she reign!

POINTS: The sweetness of this show. Yes it has action and fun dialogue and cool characters and a great sweetness about it. It feels like they took all of the sweetness from Melissa Benoist who is a wonderful Supergirl, and poured it all over the show. Everything has a quick beat to it and wow way to go show! To have that kind of feel in a TV show is amazing.

PITFALLS: Hmmm……..   I’ll let ya’ know.

FEMALE CHARACTER(S): It’s about Supergirl! Melissa Benoist is utterly charming, sweet, and powerful as Supergirl and her alter ego Kara Danvers. I love her range of emotion – one that she can portray it and that the show let’s her have it. There was a recent episode where she talked about rage. Wow.

AND EVEN BETTER she is not the only woman in this show by a long shot! She is surrounded by other women who also have their own stories and character arcs. There is sister Alex Danvers played by Chyler Leigh and boss Cat Grant played by Calista Flockhart who make up a great deal of Supergirl’s world.

CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Nope. In fact, they do a lot to open people’s eyes!

HIGH POINT(S):

*BEGIN POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!*

1.) Sharing with Jimmy. Wow, just wow. Kara invites Jimmy Olsen played by Mehcad Brooks to do some bag – or in Supergirl’s case – car punching – to help her release her rage. She tells Jimmy women aren’t supposed to show or be angry. Jimmy points out that our culture this is also true for black men.

2.) Sharing with Kat. OMG. Supergirl as Kara gets angry at her boss and says so to her face. Boss Cat Grant is stunned and then shares with Kara about the cultural standards about women being angry and expressing it. She also never tells Kara not to be angry. Wow. Talk about a cultural lesson delivered in a fun way. I saluted the TV.

3.) Kara has a crush on Jimmy. Oh and the great part about that is she is white and he is black and just squee!

BECHDEL TEST (Website): 3 of 3. Oh yeah!! I like that this Supergirl is not the lone woman amongst many men. It is good to see other women supporting her as well.
