OVERALL: Well this is fun. Where is season two?
POINTS: Show has a really cool concept and a diverse ensemble cast. Love it!
PITFALLS: Hmm… see Cultural Pitfalls. Can’t think of anything else.
FEMALE CHARACTER(S): Our main heroine, Kirsten, played by Emma Ishta, is another flawed genius character (think Sheldon from Big Bang Theory or Brennan from Bones). Lots and lots of intellectual intelligence, no social or emotional. She is both funny and makes me often think “Why do they tolerate her?” 🙂
We also have Maggie played by Salli Richardson-Whitfield and Camille played by Allison Scagliotti. Camille gets the big laughs and defies stereotypes the most. Maggie is a leader and I like how you see her maneuver her job and responsibilities.
There are also other female characters in the background and they are cool too. So are the men.
CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Ok boys, you can grow-up. Occasionally our two main young male characters make really stupid, sexist remarks that don’t work. They have been called on this but hmm….. a little more calling would be good. Still everyone for 99% of the time respects everyone’s brain and skills and that is good!
Character Age: Look. I know Hollywood wants to sell shows by having young and beautiful actors. I get it. However, a PhD in Computer Science should be a bit older than 24. Unless she went straight from her undergrad into the PhD program. Also those experts in the lab look awful young as in their twenties. People know this: To get a PhD and be a scientific expert means you gotta really be in your 30s. Ok, yes, not all the time, but hey, I work in academia and I would like to see 30+ being represented a bit more. 🙂
HIGH POINT(S): Ensemble cast. Although there are times I want to talk with the writer’s about a few of the male characters being immature when it comes to relationships, I basically enjoy watching the whole show.
Oh and the show didn’t put down psychics! I know that sounds silly I would say that however I think science will one day understand psychic phenomenon. Which is also what our heroine said! Cool!
