OVERALL: Joy! Happiness! Purr like a contented kitten with full belly. It’s the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) ya’ll and I get to see it every week! Can you tell I really like this show?
Plus I just want to add that it took me a long time to review this show because I just vibe with it so much.
POINTS: It’s part of the MCU. It is fun, has wonderful characters, and always keeps me guessing. I look forward to this show, and rewatching it, every week.
PITFALLS: Took a while for the show to get going but once it did OH MY! What a roller coaster ride it has been! I prepare myself for each new episode because I never know what they are going to do. The show truly feels LARGE like a good comic book. 🙂 So uh, no more pitfalls. 🙂
FEMALE CHARACTER(S): In a word, Yes. Equality is of course supported in this Whedonverse show and I LOVE that women get to be respected leaders in this universe.
CULTURAL PITFALL(S): I’ll admit, at first I was worried that the cast was so white. Or as my nephew said “They all look like Abercrombie and Fitch models.” However that changed at the end of season one and season two has more PoC characters and that is good. 🙂
Also the writers could stop using male only words like mankind, referring to “one man” in the abstract, etc. That sexist language is getting really old especially when you have so many wonderful capable women on the show. 🙂
1.) Phil Coulson. He’s the man. He exists because Clark Gregg stole our fandom hearts in Iron Man and he’s never given it back. He is a mixture of father figure, therapist, leader, total badass. Plus he has a wonderful voice. I am looking forward to DECADES of watching Clark Gregg play Phil Coulson. Oh and check him out in the Marvel One-Shot: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer. So excellent.
2.) Agent May. I have a huge girl crush on Agent May perfectly played by Ming-Na Wen. She is just the most wonderful character and she has a huge following. Rightly so. Yes she is a fierce warrior, cream of the crop. But this is the Whedonverse everyone so we don’t have to get stuck in stereotypes. She’s funny, caring, and is a great second in command to Coulson. I would carry her swag at a convention any day. (Come to Gen Con Ms. Wen!) Watch some Agent May videos and enjoy.
3.) Lucy Lawless. Alas! She was only in one episode – so far, but any show with Lucy makes me happy. Plus her character is referred to with loyalty and respect. Female characters don’t often get that and it is so nice when it happens.
4.) Movie Tie-Ins. I love all of the references to the MCU timeline. Watching Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier and this show at the same time gave me chills. Love it. I can’t wait to see what tie-ins will occur with Avengers: Age of Ultron.
5.) Don’t touch Lola. Just don’t. 😉
BECHDEL TEST (Website): 3 of 3! Pretty much every time. Squee!!
RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): 1 of 3 to 3 of 3! Pretty much every time. 3 of 3 all the time in season two. 🙂
