TV Review: “The Last Ship”

OVERALL: Good and different from what I expected. Very cool and diverse characters. Plus I can never guess what will happen next.

POINTS: It is fun to watch a wide range of interesting characters create great action. Just a good time so enjoy.

PITFALLS: Now look, lots of people may not be happy that Michael Bay is producing this. I can see why. (I do enjoy his action though.)  Yet this show has more meat and character than a typical Bay movie. Perhaps it is because it is a TV series and thus we can get into plot and character as well as great action.

One reviewer said the show was basically military porn. Well I just can’t agree. I can see why someone would say that BUT wow! If this how our Naval men and women behave then they are indeed the best and brightest and huzzah I am in total support of them!! All characters no matter color, gender, or sexual identity, is treated equally and with respect. So awesome! I love that there are gay characters and that men and women talk with each other as equals and respectfully. I have also appreciated the anti-rape and anti-sexual assault messages that have occurred a few times. Huzzah!

So uh, not a pitfall. 🙂 Could have been but it is not. 🙂

FEMALE CHARACTER(S): There are lots and they are cool. Plus it is nice to see such support given to the main woman doctor, Dr. Rachel Scott played by Rhona Mitra. She is given the same dialogue that a male character would be given AND the other characters use the same dialogue they would use when describing a male character so YAY because that equals respect.

Plus we have many other wonderful female and male characters so go and enjoy.

CULTURAL PITFALL(S): See Pitfalls above. Oh but yeah, the Russian commander is shown as being really bad. Maybe he will show more depth as the show progresses.

HIGH POINT(S): The diverse characters and how well they treat each other.

BECHDEL TEST (Website): 1 of 3 to 3 of 3 depending on the episode. Hells yes!!!!

RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): 1 of 3 to 3 of 3 depending on the episode. Hallelujah!!!
