TV Review: “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries”

OVERALL: I adore this show. It has everything. Found it on Netflix and happy find it is!

POINTS: You will love the beauty of the show in it’s 1920’s color palette and textures – and acting. You feel like you are in the ’20s.

PITFALLS: Nope. Can’t think of anything.

FEMALE CHARACTER(S): Yes!! Oh goodness not only is there a wonderful lead character, Miss Phryne (pronounced “Fry-nee) Fisher is a blast! A woman of her time and ahead of it as well. Totally wonderful. Plus that’s not all! There are lots of good women in this show and so far every episode I have ever watched (I’m in Season 1 still) passes the Bechdel Test. Squee. The men are just as wonderful.

CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Well this is Australia in the ’20s focusing on the dominant culture which means European descent. However this show also redeems by dealing with immigrant and cultural issues so there are PoC characters in many episodes. So huzzah to that. 🙂

HIGH POINT(S): This whole show is like viewing a slice of history. I swear you feel as though you are looking out of the window of the TARDIS*. Just watch and enjoy the wonderful actors work the colorful scripts.

Also know that this show does not shy away from social issues. Sexism, racism, immigration issues, big company greed are all dealt with. However the issues are all still delivered with a style reminiscent of ’20s style. One of my great pleasure is Phryne talking about birth control – she has what looks like a diaphragm case. She is also unashamed about her sexual activity and that I like very much. I have no use for “slut-shaming” and it seems neither does Phryne.

Hubby wants everyone to know that they should watch this show. Costumes, blocking, filming, colors are all perfect. Turn on your Netflix and enjoy!
