OVERALL: Oh Godzilla, you rock.
POINTS: This is a very well made movie that is quite good and salutes the original Godzilla movies. Thoroughly enjoyable.
PITFALLS: Possible * [SPOILER ALERTS] *
1.) Detonate Nuclear Weapons. Now look I have a hard time when in fiction, nuclear weapons are detonated and like there is no major fallout. People in fiction are very cavalier about setting off nukes. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!! It’s nut just the immediate destruction you have to worry about, but the fallout is really bad too. Check it out at NukeFix: Blast Effects. So I guess what I am trying to say is that a nuke is a BIG DEAL with long lasting repercussions and therefore should not be treated lightly in movies and not be set off – in or out of fiction.
2.) People in the Upper Stories. One of my FB buddies commented how odd it was that there were people still in the upper stories of buildings on the second day of the attack. Yes, that was odd.
3.) Radiation. Apparently the monsters, aka Godzilla and Mothra, eat radiation. This is awesome! I mean, why wasn’t anyone talking about how great it would be to have these creatures eat the radiation that was killing the rest of the planet. Just a thought.
* END [SPOILER ALERTS] *
FEMALE CHARACTER(S): Oh fun! All of our women characters are professionals and are in a science field! Hooray! We get to see Vivienne Graham, played by Sally Hawkins, talk science and be a voice of compassionate reason in the movie. We also get to see Juliette Binoche as Sandra Brody
CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Well, I understand that the lone soldier coming to get his wife and child is very dramatic, but in reality, well in this type of situation where a city was under attack from a force of nature, well
HIGH POINT(S): Please note that I saw this movie with Erica and Erica is not only a die hard horror flick fan she is also a very hardcore Godzilla fan. I learned a lot about Godzilla and thus must share what I learned.
1.) The Roar. Oh yeah. Hooray for this movie as it used Godzilla’s original road. Want to hear it? Go here: www.godzillamovie.com and click the ROAR link. It’s GREAT!
2.) The Ray. Oooo squee! Godzilla can shoot rays out of his mouth. This gave the audience a big thrill when he did. Especially the old school Godzilla fans. My buddy Erica applauded and cheered.
3.) Old School Godzilla. This Godzilla movie is new BUT he still looks like the original Godzilla. Short neck, round head, thick shoulders, and lots of attitude. Enjoy. It is fun to be able to cheer for the big “monster” known as Godzilla.
4.) Director: Gareth Edwards. Huzzah Mr. Edwards. You did a fantastic job with this movie. Excellent crafting of this movie. It was fabulous and you deserve many more directing opportunities.
5.) Bloomington, IN. or, Hooray I Live in the Midwest. As Erica and I discussed after the movie, we are so glad we live in a small college town in the Midwest ’cause natural disasters, warheads, or giant monsters don’t attack us. 🙂 (Cheers to FB friend Linda who said the same thing.)
BECHDEL TEST (Website): 2 of 3. Well not bad. 🙂
RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): 1 of 3. There are at least two PoC who speak in the movies. They don’t really interact but it is cool that they are there. One is the scientist Dr. Ichiro Serizawa played by Ken Watanabe and one is Captain Russell Hampton played by Richard T. Jones. Both men had authority in the movie and that was good to see.

LION PAW PRINTS: 3 of 5. Go see it. 🙂
Godzilla! I went to see it at Imax 3D, which was awesome! It was definitely a feast for the eyes and as fun as Godzilla should be.
But yeah, I had to keep reminding myself to suspend disbelief. In addition to the nukes, the way the water moved bothered me. Especially since the first time we see Godzilla dive under, the water swirls and does the little whirlpools perfectly, and I was impressed. But then later, the carrier was sailing right next to Godzilla without rocking? Not to mention when he went underneath it. And sometimes Godzilla causes wave surges when he surfaces, but sometimes he doesn’t?
But still, it was pretty awesome.
