Movie Review: “Veronica Mars”

OVERALL: Welcome back Veronica Mars. I enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would

POINTS: Clever writing, clever mystery, great plot twists, and of course Veronica Mars herself. Go and enjoy!

PITFALLS: The pacing is slow. Not as slow as The Hobbit movies, but it is a slightly slower pace than normal. I did not notice this until Hubby pointed it out. I don’t think this takes away from the movie though.

FEMALE CHARACTER(S): There is the smart and capable Veronica Mars played by Kristen Bell. I love that the character also narrates this movie – like the TV show – and that her words are beautifully crafted and intelligent. I could listen to Veronica Mars talk for hours. Well done, Ms. Bell.

CULTURAL PITFALL(S): I find that there is a lot of misogyny in the Veronica Mars stories. Yes she tackles them head-on, but I get a bit bothered by it. I will eventually write more about it.

HIGH POINT(S): 1.) Kristen Bell. What a star! The woman gives sparkle to the screen. She has a wonderful charisma that makes her compelling to watch. You can’t help but smile when you see and hear her voice. I find I really enjoy her voice and her voice overs in the movie. Speaking of voices in movies, Ms. Bell is also one of the leads in Frozen, one of my favorite movies. Since Frozen has become the first animated movie to make over $1 billion, I hope Ms. Bell can carry some box office clout and continue growing her career. 2.) Revisiting the series. Veronica Mars fans will enjoy seeing the old faces, places, and plot twists. If you know nothing about Veronica Mars, fret not. You will enjoy the movie too. Note: I loved seeing the wide age range of the audience when I saw the movie. I could tell there were TV fans there as well as others who wanted to see a good movie. That is excellent. 3.) Crowd-funded movie. I can barely believe it. The Veronica Mars producers needed money so they set up a Kickstarter campaign and wow! They needed $2,00,000 and got $5,700,000. I gotta admit, I did not think they would make any money at all. But I was pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong. So this movie happened because of the fans. Oh so very cool. I like this and hope the trend continues.

BECHDEL TEST (Website): 3 of 3. Not surprising since Veronica Mars has many friends including female friends.

RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): 1 of 3. Although it is not at this time on the official site, I would give it a 1 of 3 as there are two characters that are friends of Veronica’s. Percy Daggs III plays Veronica’s good friend Wallace Fennel. She also has a friendly acquaintance, Eli “Weevil” Navarro, played by Francis Capra. Although they do not hold a conversation together they are boht
