Movie Review: “Frozen 2”

Frozen 2 official movie poster

Frozen 2

OVERALL: Beautiful. Just beautiful. Go see it. So what if you don’t have children! You have yourself. Now go! I have waited for this movie for a long time and I was not disappointed. This movie filled my heart. I love it, love it, love it. I don’t care that I am an adult. I loved it!

I decided to see the first Frozen after hearing how trope breaking it was and I heard the Oscar winning song Let It Go. I’ve never been a Disney princess girl because they were never characters I wanted to emulate. It wasn’t until Beauty and the Beast and book loving Belle, that I started to want to see Disney movies. Needless to say, Frozen was my Disney movie and I actually do dress like Elsa, so there.

I, like many others, waited impatiently for the sequel. I was not disappointed.

I saw in Frozen 2 themes about growing up. I feel this movie “grew-up” from the first. The animation was richer, the songs were operatic, and the characters grew. I feel that Frozen was a hero’s journey for Elsa to discover herself. In Frozen 2, Elsa ups her journey, ups the stakes, and journeys not just for herself but her family her people, her country, for Arendelle. AND Anna, Kristoff, even Olaf have their own hero journeys of growing up as well. Very cool.

Like the first Frozen, I wanted to cry at the end because it was over. I wanted to live in that movie. Like the first Frozen, I will see Frozen 2 over and over again both in the theater and at home.

My original Frozen review.

POINTS: Oh my. This movie fills the senses of sight and sound. It is another hero’s journey and I loved it. Note that this time many characters get a hero’s journey.

PITFALLS: Mmmm…. None.

FEMALE CHARACTER(S): If there is one thing that Frozen has been famous for it is the female characters: Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell ). They are fun, rich characters and you always want to know more about them. You also have in this movie Iduna (Evan Rachel Wood), Yelena (Martha Plimpton), and Honeymaren (Rachel Matthews ). A nice range of age and color for our women in Frozen 2 and that is so good.

CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Oh wow! Not a pitfall but WHOA TOTAL SPOILER so see below. If people don’t write papers and essays about this I will *headdesk*. It will so be here. OMG THAT WAS SO FREAKING AWESOME!

HIGH POINT(S):

1.) The Music – Elsa. I don’t know if this is true, however I think that the songwriters really decided to let Idina Menzel “let it go*” and wrote music to show off her world class pipes. Wow. IMDB Video: Kristen, Idina, and “Frozen II” Co-Stars Break Down “Into the Unknown (1:41).

2.) The Movie Poster. OMG Elsa looks so ferocious and determined. Wait! So do Anna and Kristoff. Nice. The stakes are going to be upped, says the movie poster. They were and I like it.

3.) Kristoff’s 80s Ballad. Oh so well done. I remember 80s videos. This was a perfect salute. Good job Kristoff. Good job everyone.

4.) Anna’s Ballad. She has one that is quite somber. Well done.

5.) Charades. You’ll know it when you see it.

6.) Costumes. I know, I know, they are animated characters but if I were renewing my vows, I would so be wearing Elsa’s dress.

7.) Elsa’s Mountain and Ice Castle. Our characters pass Elsa’s mountain with her ice castle from the first movie. That made me so happy.

8.) End of Credits Scene with Olaf. Oh for goodness sake if you don’t know by now to sit through the credits, well learn, stay, and enjoy. 🙂 Note: It ties all of the movies Frozen, Frozen Fever, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure together.

BECHDEL TEST (Website): 3 of 3. YES! AND that would be true even if our sisters, Elsa and Anna, didn’t talk to each other. 🙂

RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): 3 of 3. Wait? What? Yup. Now that is cool.

* Sorry. Ok, not.

~* SPOILERS YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! *~

River Song says "Spoilers."

1.) Huge Spoiler: Cultural/Environmental Destruction AND Making Amends. WHUHUH?!?!?! For too long we have watched white/European descent people (I am one, so chill) invade other people who are not white like us. Then we destroy their land, kill them, and commit lots of horrible crimes against nature to make things “good” for us. This happens in Frozen 2. I mean, WHOA! Not only does it happen, part of growing up is Elsa confront the memory image of her grandfather and telling him he is wrong. Then both she and Anna realize they must make amends to the people and the land,  AND THEY ACTUALLY DO IT! Like, if this doesn’t blow your mind… Ok, it blew mine. It made me so happy. Time to save the planet and stop committing acts of genocide. Yup. That was actually in a Disney movie. Love. It.

#.) Gender Bending Singing! – A man sings one of Elsa’s big show stopping tunes! Lead singer Brendon Urie takes on Into the Unknown and owns it!! Well done sir. Well done producers for trusting him. Just well done.

#.) My Oscar Wish Both Idina Menzel and Brendon Urie sing Into the Unknown. *sigh*
