Shazam

OVERALL: Go see it. This weekend. Now. It is good, fun, and hubby and I want to see it again. An excellent addition to the DCEU. 

POINTS: This movie was perfectly crafted. It fit together like an expert puzzle. Sometimes when I watch movies I can feel the off timing or the bad edit. Not in Shazam. Director David F. Sandberg should be proud of his work and the work of cast and crew. 

Speaking of cast, I usually don’t like Zachary Levi as for some reason I find him irritating. I am so changing that story now. He was PERFECT as the suddenly grown superhero. Charming and funny and believable. Also the young cast members Asher Angel as Billy Batson and Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddie Freeman carried the movie effortlessly on their shoulders as well. Well done, everyone!   

PITFALLS: I’ll let you know. Ok, my big one: It’s not out on DVD yet so I can’t watch it from my couch. Guess I’ll have to go back to the theater. 

FEMALE CHARACTER(S): Yup. We have Rose Vasquez (Marta Milans) as a cool and caring foster mother. Sisters Darla Dudley (Faithe Herman) and Mary Bromfield (Grace Fulton) transform into Super Hero Darla (Meagan Good) and Super Hero Mary (Michelle Borth). They are interesting characters in their own right and Mary even shows love and loyalty for her foster family. Yes, alright, it is a moment to show the hero how to grow, but still I liked it. In short, the women are their own people and that is always good.

CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Hmm….. Can’t think of any right now. 

HIGH POINT(S): The crafting of this movie cannot be stressed enough. It fit together perfectly. Well done! Oh and the SPOILER below. 

BECHDEL TEST (Website): 2 of 3 or 3 of 3. I can’t remember. But I did like that there were women and they were cool.

RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): 2 of 3 or 3 of 3. I can’t remember. However there was diversity and that was good.

Seeing Superman at the end of the movie holding a lunch tray MADE MY DAY! Plus the reaction of Freddy was beyond perfect. That was the cherry on top of an already perfect dessert of a movie. I want more!!
