Movie Review: “Mr. Holmes”

Mr. Holmes movie poster

Mr. Holmes

OVERALL: When this movie ended, my husband looked at me and said “There are very few perfect movies, but this was one of them.” I must agree. 🙂

POINTS: All of it.

PITFALLS: Nope none. Except the super teeny, tiny, Me-Issue in the SPOILER below.

***SPOILER!!!** I wanted to see the mother and son get in writing Mr. Holmes’s house and money ’cause I worried about them and I didn’t want them to lose it. I know, I know, they did get it all ’cause that is the story but oh me, I worried. ***END SPOILER!!!**

FEMALE CHARACTER(S): Yes. We have Laura Linney as Mrs. Munro, Holmes’ housekeeper and Hattie Morahan as Ann Kelmot, the catalyst for Holmes’ self-exploration. Both characters are superbly acted and created. They are not two dimensional and Holmes, as well as other men in the movie, must come to terms with them as human beings in their own right. Excellent.

CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Hmmm… Well the SPOILER under Pitfalls above

HIGH POINT(S):

1.) Beautiful piecing together of this movie. It flowed perfectly.

2.) Sir Ian McKellen. ‘Nuff said.

3.) Watching Sherlock Holmes develop some emotional and social intelligence always pleases me. I am not impressed with people who think intellectual prowess is all there is to being human. Uh, wrong. I like people who know how to behave with courtesy. Glad Holmes learned. 🙂

BECHDEL TEST (Website): 2 of 3. 🙂

RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): 2 of 3. I did not expect this.
