OVERALL: Fun, non-stop*, action movie in a plane. Best in a plane movie ever, BTW.
POINTS: This is the first time I’ve seen a movie that took place inside a plane that really FELT like being in the plane. The cast was diverse and didn’t all look alike too. I actually believed Liam Neeson as an action hero, which doesn’t always work for me. Also I really didn’t think I would like this movie and I did. 🙂
PITFALLS: As I wrote above, Liam Neeson doesn’t always work for me as an action hero, BUT he was believable in this movie so not a Pitfall really. 🙂
FEMALE CHARACTER(S): Julianne Moore as Jen Summers is AMAZING!!! It is so refreshing to see a 30+ year old woman as a lead. So awesome. Plus her character was fun and had depth. The other prominent women in the movie are Michelle Dockery as Nancy and Lupita Nyong’o as Gwen, two stewardesses, give the movie extra character depth. They respond like professionals and have competence in their jobs. So very good.
CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Hmmm….. When I think of something I’ll let you know.
HIGH POINT(S): Age Appropriate. I get really, really, really tired of shows when the men get to have diversity in age and size and the women all look like 20 year-old fashion models. *gag* Here our hero, Liam Neeson, says to younger women that they are too young for him. Then he flirts with Julianne Moore (who is always gorgeous) and eventually the two look like they might start a relationship. Cool. They treat each other with respect. I LIKE it!
BECHDEL TEST (Website): 3 of 3. Oh well done! I am also not surprised since there were several moments when women were together and working together. Good job.
RACIAL BECHDEL TEST (Website): 1 of 3, but maybe 2 of 3. I really, really, liked the racial diversity of this movie. There are several different ethnic groups represented in this movie. Even better: Racism against an Arab descent man is frowned upon by the hero and later the bigot ends his bigotry. Oh so awesome!!!!
