Movie Review: “Carrie”

OVERALL: Yup, it’s Carrie. This is almost more of a character study than a horror movie. That fact alone can elevate it to being an even better horror movie. Thought frankly it is more of a good revenge story in my books.

POINTS: Good acting by everyone in the movie. Hats off to Julianne Moore and Chloe Grace Moretz for their outstanding work and great work together. Plus SCHWEET! This movie was directed by a woman, Kimberly Pierce, and that always makes me happy. It is good to see more women directing. 🙂

I also think that when Carrie cuts loose the movie focuses on revenge and I’m a fan of revenge plots. It is fun watching her become a stronger person and take charge of her life.

PITFALLS: I have to be honest. The story of Carrie doesn’t really move me. I guess I just can’t get beyond the whole shower scene. Yeah, it’s me, I know and agree. Perhaps I distance myself from this story because it just seems to painful. Part of me says it is too far fetched and yet I know that isn’t true. So if there is distance from this movie/story it is all me and I will own that.

{*SPOILER ALERT*} Also I was annoyed when Carrie chose to kill herself with her mother at the end. Ok, I can see why someone would say that was the only logical end, but it just felt wrong. I guess I wanted to Carrie to ride off into the sunset just like other heroes of revenge flicks. {*END SPOILER ALERT*}

FEMALE CHARACTER(S): It was an interesting study in ideas about women. The mother’s insane, antiquated ideas about women and sex contrasted with Carrie trying to break away from these beliefs. It is also nice that there was a good female school mate Sue Snell played by Gabriella Wilde was a saving grace. I am glad when women get to show compassion and courage in a movie, or any story for that matter. I like how Sue tried to make amends to Carrie. I like how she admitted she was wrong. And I liked her final words about bullying and pushing people.

CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Hmmmmmm……. Well. There is inference that two teens are having sex without birth control – OH FOR GOODNESS SAKES PEOPLE USE CONDOMS!!!!!!!!!! But that’s about it.

HIGH POINT(S): This movie definitely shone the light on bullying. It also showed the hardship of being an outcast.

BECHDEL TEST (Website): II knew this would get a 3 of 3 top rating. 🙂 It’s a bit self-evident I am pleased to say.
