Movie Reviews: “The World’s End”

  • OVERALL: Wow. I was not expecting it to be that good!
  • POINTS: The World’s End combined two types of movies seamlessly and beautifully. First the movie began as a “reclaim your youth/get drunk to prove you are young still” movie with sci-fi world invasion. So amazing. Usually when movies try to do two things, it fails at both. This one succeeded at both AND did it seamlessly. Everything was believable.
  • PITFALLS: I’m really tired of men talking about having sex with women in a demeaning to women fashion. I’m also tired of men not wanting to hear about their female family member’s sexuality. Uh, yo, straight men, you want to get laid? Be respectful and honorable in speech and behavior. Really.
  • FEMALE CHARACTER(S): There was really only one – Sam Chamberlain – who was the sister of one of the five heroes. I liked how she got to help “win the day”. Her part wasn’t big, but she wasn’t a sniveling idiot who needed to be saved.
  • CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Well as stated earlier I am tired of men being derogatory towards women and sexuality activity.
  • HIGH POINT(S):  *SPOILER ALERT* 1. Excellent fight choreography.; 2. FINALLY some humans told off the great potential overlords the same way I would!!!! When three of our heroes face the alien overlord they give the overlord what for. The overlord offers the usual: world peace, kindness, perfect world BUT if you don’t follow them EXACTLY they kill you and replace you with an artificial life form. Really? I couldn’t go along with that and I would say so if in that situation. I am glad our heroes did the same. I loved it. Granted it would be nice to have a peaceful world, but hey, don’t turn is into automatons to get it.
  • BECHDEL TEST (Website): Wow. The Bechdel test is in dispute about this. At first the rating was 0/3 and then 2/3. I would give it the 0/3. Still like the movie but well I don’t think it fully covered the Bechdel Test criteria.
  • DVD/BLU-RAY WORTHY: Oh yes! I am looking forward to a movie party with this.
  •  LION PAW PRINTS:  4 out of 5. It broke a lot of movie tropes and did it successfully. 🙂
