- OVERALL: OMG – I loved it!!! It had gamer girls and gaming and computers and LOVED IT! Totally happy and victorious ending for everyone!!
- POINTS: Two heroines who were NOT defined by wanting to find a man, two cool heroes who went on character growth journeys, cool visuals, and OMG some gamers are girls!!!! Being a big gamer myself I get really tired of people thinking only boys play games. Uh, no, we all play. LOVE IT!!! Plus some computer talk for us computer geeks. 🙂
- PITFALLS: Still can’t think of any. 🙂
- FEMALE CHARACTER(S): Ok, Jane Lynch plays a video game captain – be still my beating heart – and Sarah Silverman delivers as our top heroine Vanellope. Vanellope is complicated and we learn about her needs and wants in layers. She holds her own for who she is and what she wants. And she delivers a great SPOILER ALERT (see HIGH POINTS below) at the end that thrilled me!!! Jane Lynch’s Calhoun has great “back story” so sayeth some of the other characters and is also a fully realized character who isn’t fixated on getting a men. Hoo-Rah!
- CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Smashed ’em. I don’t remember a lot of black/yellow/red/brown characters so boo to that. We need more of those, people.
- HIGH POINT(S): SPOILER ALERT! OMG! At the end our heroine becomes a princess – the ultimate culturally approved female fantasy – and SHE REFUSES!! She’s not a princess, she’s a racer! I almost wept with glee. 🙂
- BECHDEL TEST (Website): Passed all three criteria! Not only did I think that during the movie (yeah, I did think that during the movie and it made me really happy) but even the Bechdel Test site agrees. 🙂
