CFR Fave Quote: “I heard you the first time.” – Edith Cushing from Crimson Peak
Crimson Peak
OVERALL: Oh. My.
POINTS: This is a beautiful mood piece that, as stated before in other reviews, more of a Gothic romance reminiscent of Rebecca than true horror. It was also really cool to watch this movie knowing that it had been inside of director Guillermo del Toro for years. I am glad he got his wish and got to make. I’m happier I got to see it.
PITFALLS: Well if what you wanted was a real haunted house make you scream movie, you were probably disappointed. I was a bit shocked that the movie was not as terrifying as I thought it would be. But I was scared and very intrigued.
FEMALE CHARACTER(S): Our main character and heroine is Edith Cushing – well played by Mia Wasikowska – is a treat. She takes the world head on and questions authority. Granted being an upper class woman that is easier for her to do than a serving woman, but it is still good to see her question authority. We also have sister Lucille Sharpe played by Jessica Chastain take total control of every scene. Chastain plays a great crazed villain. Those two interacting were both painful and funny. If you have ever had a dysfunctional family moment, you will totally understand.
Note: Del Toro is just cool. Check out his interview with The Mary Sue.
CULTURAL PITFALL(S): Whatever those pitfalls are – classism, sexism – are brought to light as unsavory and wrong. Cool.
HIGH POINT(S): Watching Edith’s character stay “curious” as Del Toro has said. She is scared, alone, but willing to learn more about what is happening. That makes her a cool character.
Plus, OMG, the costumes are to swoon for!
