The Last Showgirl
Welcome to the first review from the The AZ Cranks!!
The Last Showgirl is a “Coming of Age Senior Story”
This movie tells the story of a showgirl performing in her last show. Her show closes down after 38 years and she can’t find a new job. She knows only one thing and feels left aside. What does a showgirl do when her show is done? She has done one thing her whole life, doing what she loves – being a showgirl. This is really a movie about aging. About what happens, especially to women about aging. It is a movie about what people do when they no longer have an income due to aging, a lack of social structure, no pension or retirement, no health care, and they are alone.
We know the main character, Pamela Anderson’s character Shelley, lived her dream and when it ended she didn’t know how to live the rest of her life. Shelly lived her life the way she felt fulfilled and felt successful. She found at at the end there was a different way to live even if she hadn’t known about it. The movie is cut with moments of mundane living and the flash and glamour of the stage.
The Last Showgirl is told in a non-linear story line. It is a slice of life over a two week period of time with flashbacks.
The colors of the movie are dark and brownish. The film quality feels like it was shot on 16mm as it has a grainy quality.
The acting is very good. Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis did an excellent job. Anderson is deserving of all of the praise that she is receiving. It is good to see someone who has been reviled for only being a pretty face show her acting skills at last. (We are rooting for her to get the Golden Globe award for Best Actress.)
See This Movie If: You are in the mood for a feeling movie or a movie that feels like a like a book.
Final Score: B+ with 4 out of 5 Saguaros

I want to see this movie. I’m also wondering if it will make me cry. Interesting Note: The movie was shot in 18 days. Wow. I have great respect for that.
Thanks AZ Cranks! I look forward to sharing your thoughts with the world. 😉
