Cranky Curmudgeon: “YouTube”

Something unexpected happened to me when I finally got internet nearly two years ago. Most of you will roll your eyes and say but of course, but this came as a huge surprise to me. I became hooked on short content on everything from camping asmr videos from around the world (no lie, one of my favorites is South Korean and another is New Zealand), a hilarious dumpster diver, petite women professional eaters who can consume six pounds of anything in an hour, lawn reclamations, and family updates in fun places like Alaska. There was a kind of short content I had watched for a few years previously on my phone, when I could get it pointed in the right direction to pick up a bar of reception. Actual internet greatly broadened my ability to watch a lot more of it.

Of course I’m talking about lesbian couples. As with anything else on the internet, there is a multitude of choices, but I’m going to talk about the ones I really love. I first noticed a young couple called Paige and Holly, and boy were they ever young. I’ve been watching them for years and they’re just turning thirty. While they were both in university to become finance powerhouses, they started dating and then began making content seated at the kitchen table of Holly’s apartment. They were so cute, and so funny and so inventive that their brand quickly grew to the point of not needing a finance career. Then they got married, bought a house and got a little boring. That kinda breaks my heart, but I do still check in on them from time to time. Here’s a very early sample from the kitchen years:

Paige and Holly

Through them I learned about Rose and Rosie, an English couple who have been together forever. I was still hesitant about branching out to other couples, one because they were hard to watch at home for a few years, and two because I’ve never been comfortable with the lesbian culture. Hey, you already knew I’m a bit strange. When I first met them they had already been making content for a while, and been married for years. They are boisterous fast talkers who can get spicy in a split second and are pretty much the grand dames of lesbian internet couples. Since I found them they have upgraded their house and had two children. Their kids names are cringy, but I’m not British so what do I know. Warning for this video, Rosie does a bit of lite rap.

These two couples have a similar, old fashioned youtube style, though as with every couple in this review you can find content on pretty much every platform. A fair number of these women are hard core gamers but I’m not so into gaming that I enjoy watching other people play. What drew me to these couples was their romantic spirit, hilarious sense of humor, and obvious niceness. The great part about YouTube is that you can find a lot of content for whatever floats your boat, so I encourage you to dip a toe into whatever kind of relationship videos you think you might be interested in. There’s nothing like a little affirmation to brighten your day.

But then, after years of splashing in the kiddie pool, I accidentally tuned into this couple while up with insomnia one morning. I had already encountered Nicole, aka The Lesbian Lumberjack, so I was familiar with her content. Me, and over a million other people. But I saw these two cuties in a flannel shirt and clicked on to see what that was all about. I watched the clip below and was smitten. Haliee and Kendra have been married only a few years, but then they are very young. From them I get a much (much!) higher level of spiciness than you normally see, and also a sweet, supportive romance between two hilarious and wise for their age people. Reading the comments for them reveals a high level of “you need a man to be whole” stuff, but also a whole lot of “you are a relationship I aspire to” from a super diverse audience, not a little of it straight couples or hopefuls. I love the promise this shows for us as a people. This is the first H&K I ever watched:

Hailee and Kendra

At this point, I began to get a lot of “help” from facebook. You know how they are. And I began to get a lot of reels on my wall of other couples. Some of them just didn’t click with me, but I will make a quick list of the many I watch all the time these days.

There are some comedians that I like, especially Kristin Key who puts out a lot of reels. She’s an honest to goodness stand up comic I recommend, especially if you have a heart wrenching hamster story.  Elle Cordova does funny shorts that are often very smart and will challenge a viewer to keep up. I’ve been burning up google translate and learning a bit of French while watching the channel Mareva Kelly, a cute young couple who like to play pranks on each other. Not the mean kind, which I appreciate. Most recently I found a hilarious couple who do actual funny skits. They are a somewhat unusual couple, in that both of them are butch, or in today’s parlance, masc. Some of my favorite of their content is when Megan Married Meagan plays off that. Sometimes a couple will air a lot of personal issues, as with Ria Demiri and her wife. They both had traumatic early lives and talk about it to help others, and they can be very funny sometimes.

Others can break your heart, which is what happened with Danae Hays and Mandie Kaii. I, like nearly all of their other fans, seriously thought they were joking when they said they’re divorcing. Danae is beginning a stand up comic and country music parody career, and Mandie does fashion reels among other topics. Oddly, I have found that now the two are divorcing I feel as sad as if people who are actual friends are going through it.

Those are a few of my favorites in one of YouTube’s astounding number of niches. I’m sure you have your favorites, but the reason I put this out there is to both encourage you to find your niche and also to never be afraid to try new places. I consider the ability to find a place you can feel comfortable in to be one of the outstanding parts of the internet and places like YouTube. Of course you have to be careful, but these examples are about wholesomeness and love and humor which is an important part of life.

CFR: In Addition

EDIT: 2:29 pm Oct. 10, 2024: Ah yes. Cranky reminded me that she was denied Internet due to rural living and the inability of the providers to get it to her. Now she is hooked up and having fun. My brain needs a vacation. – CFR

I’m so proud of Crankiy. She resisted getting the Internet to her home for years. I know, I was there. I for one LOVE the Internet and need a daily does and no I do not need a 12 step program for that thank you very much.

I find I can easily get lost down many wonderful rabbit holes when on the Web, especially YouTube. I also enjoy that I can just about find anything explained to me via YouTube.

Now that I have this post and will be able to access it, I will be watching more of Cranky’s faves. Hopefully we will watch more together when she comes over again.

Huzzah Cranky! I’m glad you found some good ones. 🙂 And I am so proud of you for finally joining the digital age.
