My Comfort Show: Lower Decks

Dear Mike McMahan: This is for you, creator of my comfort show, the show I love, Star Trek: Lower Decks. I hope you get to read this soon.
I love the show Star Trek: Lower Decks. So I happily watched this video Mike McMahan Interview | Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 | NYCC 2023. Mike McMahan. Watch it yourself, it is fun. Mike McMahan is the genius behind Lower Decks. During this interview McMahan, said he wants to know of someone who says Lower Decks is their comfort show.
Well Mr. McMahan: My name is Margaret Lion and Lower Decks is my comfort show.
You see my husband and I both loved Star Trek. He said he knew he loved me when I told him we were going to the midnight showings of the Star Trek movies. When we saw the trailer for the first season of Lower Decks, see below, we were excited for it. We watched the first episode and laughed! We were both fans and kept track of new episodes and seasons. We were looking forward to season 4 when Scott, my husband, died in his sleep May 5, 2023.
In the next few days after his death I found myself needing something. Perhaps something to watch to take my mind off of my loss and to cope with the hollowness and grief. I turned to Lower Decks. I just turned the TV on and started watching it. I knew it would make me smile, and I needed a smile. Then I left it on, fell asleep, and when I woke up it was still playing. So I watched some more. And I kept watching. All day, all night, sometimes quietly, sometimes loud enough to hear through the house. I have listened to Lower Decks every day since my husband died.
When season 4 premiered I felt my heart twinge as my beloved Scott was not watching with me. However, I had my friends to share with me. I also had my friends Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford, and Tendi. The more I watched, the more Lower Decks helped me get through each day. I started turning on the show just to see my friends.
It doesn’t matter where I start to watch this show or how many times I’ve seen it: I feel the love. This is a group of characters who grow in loving and supporting each other. It is so nice to see them when I turn on the show. I want to say “Hello” to each of them. If I could serve on a Federation ship, I would be on the Cerritos and serve with these characters.
Ever since the first episode, I have been convincing people to watch this. I now have a group of friends who love Lower Decks as much as I do. We share the dialogue, the episodes, the Easter Eggs, chants! We write and talk with each other about the episodes when they first appear. We also all love Star Trek – all Star Trek.
I like to say that Lower Decks is the gateway show for watching Trek. If you know nothing about Star Trek, you will enjoy this show and laugh. If know about Star Trek, you will laugh so hard you will gasp. Worth it.
As I write this, I am watching a mystery series on TV. All I can think about is I need to get back to Lower Decks. I need the comfort of my friends. I need the love that is part of this show. I need to be on the lower decks. I need to tell them I love them and thank you.
Thank you Mike McMahon for making Lower Decks. Thank you for giving me a show that comforts and has carried me through the most difficult time in my life. My guess is, it will continue to comfort me.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
-Margaret
